KAUAI

Hand-cut · appliqué in stained-glass style · quilted

Exhibited at the Salt Spring Island Fall Fair, 2019

Kauai was directly inspired by the Kauai Botanical Gardens during a visit in 2018. The fabric for the tree leaves was bought while I was on the island, and the piece gradually evolved as the right fabrics were found for the other elements — the trunk for the "tree of life", ginger flowers, bird-of-paradise flowers and foliage.

Creating the stained-glass effect required more than 200 feet of fabric “lead”, carefully cut and constructed to frame the individual elements of the design.

Designed with a concealed pocket to carry a hanging pole, Kauai was made primarily as a wall piece, where it has lived for most of its life. It was also designed to fit a low-level king-size bed, allowing the main design to sit within the framing.
